How to stop looking like your competitors

Try this test. Open the websites of your 5 main competitors. Hide the logos. Can you really tell them apart?

If the answer is no, you have a problem. And your prospects have it too: they compare identical sites and end up choosing… the cheapest.

Uniformity kills margins

When you look like everyone else, you're interchangeable. And when you're interchangeable, the only variable that matters is price.

I've seen excellent companies fighting on rates because their image didn't justify their value. They were doing premium work with a discount image.

What creates sameness:

  • "Ready-to-use" templates
  • Generic stock photos
  • Copy pasted from competitors
  • Fear of standing out

Real "bespoke" vs the disguised template

This is exactly the fight behind Tony Design, my studio. Too many agencies sell "bespoke" and actually deliver a WordPress template (Elementor, Divi) stuffed with content: heavy, slow, identical to a thousand others, and billed as an original creation.

The difference isn't cosmetic. A template is a structure hundreds of others already use. A real build is a brand designed for it, and a site that exists nowhere else.

What we did for Azur Nettoyage

Azur Nettoyage is the illustration. Bilal had been sold a generic, soulless site by an agency. We took it all back to zero: a bespoke rebuild in Nuxt 4, matching the seriousness of his work, instead of yet another corporate-blue template copied from the 200 other cleaning companies in the region.

And the benefit isn't just visual: the site loads in 0.7 s on desktop (Lighthouse measurement), where a bloated WordPress crawls. Fast and unique.

Identity as competitive advantage

My own journey illustrates this too. Leriche Poésie is my personal project — a creative exploration that has nothing to do with "corporate web design." And it's precisely this uniqueness that attracts clients who are like me.

Your brand has a personality, a story, values. Why should your website look like a generic product off an assembly line?

What really makes the difference

  • A bold art direction — not "original for the sake of it," but consistent with your DNA
  • Signature micro-interactions — those details that make people say "wow" and that you won't find anywhere else
  • An authentic tone of voice — not copy-pasted corporate speak
  • A memorable experience — being remembered for who you are, not just what you offer

Investing in a unique identity costs more than a template. But how much does invisibility cost you? How many clients choose a competitor simply because they "look different"?
